So from what I can see when installing centOs (RHEL 5 i my case) with virtualization it installs an Xen kernel but when this component is not selected a regular kernel is installed. It is okay to use the normal kernel with the virtualization component installed?

Hey Zack,
A big thanks for this tip, I needed to use VMWare to perform an "in place" Windows to Linux migration and this helped me loads.
Keep up the great work and site.

Whoops, I take it back. System booted to GRUB menu and then couldn't find the newly installed kernel. I don't know why it happened but it was early enough on that it was just easier to reinstall OS without virtualization.

Thanks Zack. I don't know why it was going to be drawn-out and complicated... maybe because some other sources made it out to be so. This was simple thanks to your post.

Look at the end of the kernel version string - xen kernels end in "xen", like this:

2.6.18-92.1.10.el5xen

The line that says default= specifies which kernel to load, where 0 is the first one listed in the file. In my case, I had to change the line that says default=1 to default=0 to specify the non-xen kernel.

In here, how do I which kernel is to specify the non-xen kernel?
Could you e-mail me?
Thank you.
