This Phoenix Requiem webcomic totally got me (ask Lucas – me being an idiot gave him quite a laugh). Because it was so geeky and because the person who writes it is in New Zealand with a time zone difference, when the update arrived last night I wasn’t on-guard against it.

This swimming contraption looks pretty neat – basically a rubber band that holds you back so you can swim in place. For the price I’d definitely give it a shot – if we had a pool.

I bought a new chair – it was a great deal after being on sale and having a 20% off coupon. After a few days of use, I’m quite happy with it.

Additionally, you’ll notice that I added last.fm support to the blog. The actual program (audioscrobber) is a bit buggy and sometimes crashes or goes into a processor sucking loop, and still won’t scrobble songs I play on my iPod, but other than that it works pretty well. I’m in the middle of a multi-day random music binge, which should explain the eclectic nature of my playlist.

Oh, and that Mint 3 Musketeers bar with the wacky LOTR style TV ads? When you actually get one, it’s smaller than a standard 3 Musketeers, doesn’t taste as minty or chocolaty as a peppermint patty or Andes mint. In true movie reviewer style, this gets two thumbs down from me and Amy.

Can you say defamation of character lawsuit?

My ancient Toshiba cable modem (DOCSIS 1.0!) has been acting strangely (occasionally having 30-80% packet loss, etc.) for a few months now, and gave up the ghost about a week ago. I kind of knew this was coming – when we moved into this house 2 years ago, the only reason the Cox guys were willing to hook it up to the cable line was that it’s serial number was still in their system.

I bought a replacement (Linksys BEFCMU10 ver. 4 – DOCSIS 2.0) a short while ago. It works fine, but the neatest thing about it is when connected to fast sites downloading big files (system updates, video, etc.), I’m getting > 1.2MiB/s. I think this has something to do with Cox’s “Speed Boost” feature which ups the data rate for a short time under certain conditions. One other benefit is that the new modem has a diagnostic page up at http://192.168.100.1, which may prove useful sometime in the future.

Note to self – don’t start watching cute cat and/or rabbit videos online unless you have hours and hours to spend…

Speaking of cats, Lionel managed to con me and Amy into feeding him twice this morning, in flagrant disregard for his diet (he’s around 18-20 pounds, which is too much for a cat his size). Often, he’ll bug both of us for food indepenently when we come home in the evening, as in “oh, you’re home now, feed me!” even if he’s just been fed. We switched to diet food that you can only get from the vet, and that seems to be working – he doesn’t bug us about eating as much as usual.

My first thought at looking at this screen was that if you click anything other than the yellow “Accept” button, you may end up being proselytized to.

I was driving down the road, and noticed one of my customers walking beside it with a huge bag on her back that is holding a plant, and she’s drenched with sweat. I stopped and asked her if she needed help or a ride. She gets in my car, putting the plant in the back seat and asks “Is the snake still there?”. I don’t respond, but drive on in the way she was heading (which happened to be nowhere close to her house), and around the next bend in the road there was a HUGE snake, about a meter in diameter and 15 meters long. It still had the little (for it’s size) snake head that could have belonged to any normal fully grown snake.

Then the dream ended. I’m kind of glad it did.
